So you might be asking yourself, what are eyelash extensions? I keep hearing about them, seeing them all over Instagram, but I’m so confused as to what they actually are. Will they ruin my natural lashes? Is there upkeep involved? Is there anything I need to avoid when I have extensions on? The list of questions goes on and on, so here’s a list of Frequently Asked Questions (with answers) for you so you can be in the loop, and be on the same level as Beyoncé and Adele!
Q: What are eyelash extensions?
A: Eyelash extensions are artificial lashes made out of silk, mink, or synthetic material and are applied to each individual natural lash with semi-permanent glue. At our Lash Universe studio we use the most popular sizes and dimensions. They range in diameter from 0.05mm-0.15mm, and range in length from 6mm-14mm. The diameter and length best for your eyes will depend on the health and length of your natural lashes, and what they can hold, to keep the integrity of your lashes strong. Your experienced Lash Artist will be able to help you determine the best size and length to give you a customized set that will enhance your natural beauty.
Q: Will lash extensions damage my natural lashes?
A: As long as your Lash Artist applies your extensions correctly, and you follow all the aftercare instructions to take care of them, there is no reason there should be any damage done. However, if the extensions are applied incorrectly, (i.e. a single extension applied to a clump of natural lashes instead of a single natural lash) then the natural growth stages may be disrupted, which can result in loss of length, loss of strength, and even loss of lash growth altogether. All of the Lash Artists at Lash Universe are certified estheticians experienced in the proper application of lash extensions.
Q: How long does it take to apply lash extensions and what can I expect during my appointment?
A: Each eye can have an average of 90-150 lashes, and because an extension is applied to every single individual natural lash, a full set usually is done in about 2.5 hours, give or take. The process is not painful and, in fact, quite relaxing, so you can take a time out for yourself and enjoy a peaceful beauty nap or some fun conversation with your Lash Artist while she transforms your eyes!
Q: Do lash extensions fall out?
A: Just like hair on your body, your lashes go through a normal shedding cycle. Our hair grows in 3 different stages: Anagen (baby), Catagen (teenager), and Telogen (adult). Once a lash is done in the Telogen or adult stage, it will naturally fall out to make room for another lash to come in as the Anagen or baby stage to repeat the cycle all over again. Because lash extensions are applied directly to your natural lashes, when each natural lash falls out, it will take the lash extension with it. Each eye can shed between 2-5 lashes daily, so you want to make sure you get a fill appointment done every 2-3 weeks to replace the lost lashes.
Q: Are there any products I should avoid with eyelash extensions?
A: Powder eyeshadow and makeup is still safe to use, but you’ll want to avoid anything with oil in it, as the oil breaks up the bond of the glue, which can result in more extensions falling out and decreasing the longevity of your full set. If you typically use liquid eye shadow or eye liner, check the ingredients to make sure there are no oils. Mascara is also a big no-no with extensions, as it is very difficult to remove and can pull at the extension and natural lash when doing so, which can cause premature fallout, and damage to the natural lash. However, with lash extensions your lashes will have a fuller, longer look naturally without the aid of mascara, so you’ll save time in your morning routine by putting away the mascara wand!
Q: What does aftercare entail?
A: At Lash Universe, we use a small fan at the end of your appointment to speed up the drying time of the glue; however, the glue will continue the setting process over the next 24-48 hours. Because of this, you’ll want to avoid hot steam, water, and anything containing oil, to ensure the glue bonds correctly and the lash extensions you just invested in don’t fall off. You also will want to make sure to sleep on your back as much as possible to maintain the long, lush look of your new lashes. It’s also important to come back every 2-3 weeks for regular fill appointments where we replace lost extensions. A fill appointment is very similar to your initial appointment, but because we’re only replacing lost extensions, the appointment time is much shorter than your initial set. At Lash Universe, we understand that life happens and sometimes we women find it hard to take time out for ourselves. Because of this, we recommend that you book your next fill appointment before you leave to ensure you have a spot saved just for you.
Q: Is there anything else I should know?
A: Do your research! In the State of Colorado, a Lash Artist needs to have either a Cosmetology or an Esthetician License in good standing, and must also have a certification in Lash Extensions. These certifications and training mean your Lash Artist invested in their education to give you the very best product or service. Their reputation is on the line anytime they see a client, and for them to be successful, their reputation needs to be clean. Ask to see their portfolio, reviews, license and certificate – I promise they will gladly show them off because those are accomplishments they worked hard for! If they can’t show you any of these, keep looking for the right Lash Artist for you. We’re here to help.
